Install sim, the next-generation Vim

sim installs as the binary sim. Use a package where one is live, or build from source, which always works.

Packages

Each channel and whether it is live. A package that is not live yet has no command here.

Homebrew (macOS and Linux)

brew install efg-technologies/tap/sim

Build from source

This works today on Linux and macOS.

git clone https://github.com/efg-technologies/sim.git
cd sim
cargo install --locked --path sim
  • Rust 1.88 or later (the code uses let chains).
  • Linux or macOS, in any terminal. Colors, the kitty keyboard protocol and OSC 52 are used when the terminal offers them (Ghostty, kitty, WezTerm, tmux).
  • git is used for the tree's marks and signs when it is on PATH, and ripgrep for search when it is; neither is required.

Release notes and the source tarball: v0.2.0 on GitHub

First run

  • sim opens the tree of the current directory; sim dir opens another; sim file opens a file.
  • Ctrl-p finds a file, Ctrl-f searches the text, Ctrl-n opens and closes the tree.
  • zl goes round the three looks, zh turns syntax colors off, zi turns icons off.

Terminal and fonts

sim asks your terminal for its background and palette (OSC 11 and OSC 4) to compute readable colors, and uses Nerd Font icons in the tree. Without a Nerd Font, turn icons off with zi.
